Alejandro Orellana, an immigrants rights activist and leader in Centro CSO of East Los Angeles, was arrested and raided by the FBI on June 12th after participating in protests against ICE. FBI agents seized his electronic property, arrested him, and took him into federal custody. It took a press conference and a protest before he was released the next day. He is now facing the bogus federal charge of one count of conspirancy to commit civil disorder, which carries up to 5 years in prison. This Friday, June 27th, will be his preliminary hearing and first court appearance.
The New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression stands in solidarity with Orellana and demands that ALL CHARGES AGAINST HIM BE DROPPED. Orellana has been a leading member of the Chicano-led Centro CSO for over ten years, and has been public and forthcoming about his organizing against ICE raids and the Trump administration. He has done nothing wrong, and he is facing political repression just for speaking out.
The second Trump administration has unleashed a wave of terror on immigrants in the US. The National Guard has been deployed to LA in the thousands. ICE agents wait in high school parking lots and Home Depots to detain undocumented immigrants, Chicanos, Mexicans, and Central Americans with no regard for due process. Anti-ICE protesters have been met with brutal and violent force from local, state, and federal law enforcement. And now, people’s heroes like Alejandro Orellana are facing bogus federal charges and potential prison time.
PROTESTING IS NOT A CRIME. Orellana’s activism and resistance are a model for how all people should react to the current political climate. This attack on Orellana represents a threat to all of us: our right to free speech, our right to protest, and our right to say NO to ICE and the Trump administration. It is critical to defend Alejandro Orellana against the clear political repression he is facing.
This is why we are heeding the call for a NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION this Friday, June 27th. Call into U.S. Attorney Bilal Essayli’s office and demand that ALL CHARGES BE DROPPED!
