Conor Cauley was violently attacked by JSO officers, and is facing up to 10 years in prison for felony charges of resisting arrest with violence and battery of a law enforcement officer. Activists Leah Grady and Dragon Belloit were also arrested.

Videos of the arrest clearly show that the only violence came from JSO officers. These are trumped-up, bogus charges. Sheriff T.K. Waters publicly stated he wants to make an example out of these activists in order to silence people who use their right to protest Jacksonville’s involvement in the genocide of Palestinians.

With one week to go before Conor’s trial, we need to be louder than ever to demand that these charges get dropped. On May 27, 2025, three community members, Conor Cauley, Leah Grady, and Dragon Belloit, were arrested and brutalized during a city council meeting simply for speaking up against the genocide of Gaza. Thousands witnessed the viral video in which one member of the Jacksonville Palestine Solidarity Network, Conor, was violently grabbed by the neck and flipped over a row of benches. Yet, the State Attorney’s Office has persisted in launching a campaign of clear political repression by targeting Conor with two felony charges. No jury of our peers would convict someone who JSO threw over a row of chairs and the State Attorney’s Office is wasting taxpayer time and money by refusing to drop these charges. He was taken into custody without bail, nor has he been charged at this time. However, he is facing four counts of serious felony charges: false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault, and battery. These charges carry up to 14 years in state prison combined.

This is a clearly coordinated, political attack. The Attorney General of California signed off on the civil lawsuit complaint against him, which was filed by his university. Toledo has also been suspended and subsequently fired from his university teaching job. These two transgressions came in response to a one-day building occupation for Palestine done by the students on February 27th, 2026.

This is also not the first time that the students at Cal Poly Humboldt have stood up for Palestine, either. In 2024, during the spring encampment movement for Gaza, students took Siemens Hall in the name of divestment and held it for 9 days. It is clear that it is Rick Toledo that the university administration has decided to punish for the students’ unflinching fight for Palestinian liberation.

Detroit Anti-War Committee, like all anti-war and pro-Palestine organizations since Trump has taken office, is familiar with the types of attacks we’re seeing on Rick Toledo. Like with Mahmoud Khalil, Leqaa Kordia, Conor Cauley, Jessie Plichta, and many others, these attacks on organizers are an attempt to scare us out of protesting. Every time, the enemies of our movement have seen us continue to fight back, including resisting the repression of the heroes of our movement. Rick Toledo is one such hero, and we condemn his arrest, the university’s crackdown on student protesting, and the charges they’re threatening him with.

Grand Rapids Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression Statement for Rick Toledo

The Grand Rapids chapter of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression stands in firm solidarity with Rick Toledo, a graduate student and member of Students for a Democratic Society at Cal Poly Tech- Humboldt. Rick has been active in the student movement and has organized against ICE presence on campus, the university’s investments in Israel, and for accessibility among other causes.

In early March, dozens of students held a sit-in and building occupation as part of a longstanding campaign to divest from Israeli genocide and apartheid. After administrators tried to cut off the other students’ access to food and water and locked the bathrooms, Rick spoke in support of the students and their right to get food, water, and toilet paper.

Shortly after, police officers showed up at Rick’s home in the middle of the night and arrested him on a pre-charge Ramey warrant, accusing him of four felonies. Brooklyn Against War denounces the trumped-up charges, which are clearly intended to intimidate Rick and make an example out of him. The university also fired Rick from his position as an instructional aide, jeopardizing his livelihood.

Brooklyn Against War recognizes these attacks on the student movement for what they are: political repression against one of the strongest and most effective progressive forces in the country—the campus anti-genocide movement. Brooklyn Against War stands with Rick Toledo, Students for a Democratic Society, and students across the country who have been attacked and criminalized by their own administrations.

As Rick himself said, “They think that they can silence dissent, but it has never worked. Though he has not been charged at this time, he is facing four counts of serious felony charges: false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault, and battery. These charges carry up to 14 years in state prison combined. The Attorney General of California himself has signed off on a complaint against Toledo, filed by the University. Just days before, Toledo had been suspended and fired from his university teaching job. His first court appearance is scheduled for April 20, 2026.

These rotten attacks and attempts to expel him from school and to throw him into jail stem from a one-day building occupation for Palestine done by students on Feb 27. Aside from calling for the university to divest from Israeli bonds, they also called for sanctuary policies to keep ICE off campus and for striking workers to get raises. Toledo supported this building occupation and the protesting students, and in our eyes, he did nothing wrong. He deserves not only support from students, workers, and faculty all across Cal Poly Humboldt, but from progressives and people of conscience all over the country.

Students at California Polytechnic Humboldt University were a part of an inspiring wave of campus activism for Palestine. In 2024, during the spring encampment movement for Gaza, students took Siemens Hall in the name of divestment and held it for 9 days. Millions across the world watched videos of these students courageously standing up for Gaza, in the face of brutal police repression. Now the University and the state of California have decided they want someone to pay for this heroic moment, and their target of choice is Toledo. In our opinion, this is the real reason underlying the targeting and unleashing of state repression on Toledo, for a simple campus protest.

The Anti War Action Network condemns this arrest, the University crackdown, and now the threat of criminal charges. This is an attack on the right to speak about Palestine and on the right for protest for Palestine.

-March 23, 2026

Hands Off Rick Toledo, Pro-Palestine Grad Student at Cal Poly Humboldt! This is the latest in their string of acts to suppress any campus free speech for Palestine and divestment from Israel, along with suspending and firing him from his university teaching job.

We should be perfectly clear about it: there is nothing wrong with supporting any student action, including building occupations, that is taken to make demands of a university. Our rights to free speech and freedom of assembly are protected by the First Amendment, enshrined in the constitution. College protest is a long-time tradition, and it continues on today. Toledo committed no crime in supporting the student protest, and the university is determined to create lie after lie in order to demonize him.

In our view, what they really want to do is punish Toledo not for the one-day building occupation last month, but for the 9-day building occupation during the encampment movement in spring of 2024. That display of courage by the students in the name of ending university support for a genocide made it to millions of TV screens, and the state of California and university want someone to pay. Toledo is their target of choice, years later.

We demand that he not be charged of any crime, because he didn't do anything wrong. We demand that his devices be returned ASAP. Activists should learn from his example of not telling the police a single thing, including a passcode. The university and police are the criminals here for trying to scare activists out of speaking out against the university's continued financial support to Israeli apartheid. Now is not the time to suffer in silence; it’s the time to speak out. We need to condemn political repression, stand with Rick Toledo, and defend our rights to speak out for Palestine.

Don’t Charge Rick Toledo!
Give Him His Property Back!
Protesting for Palestine Is Not a Crime!

Don't forget to take action for Rick Toledo! Sign this sign-on letter on behalf of your organization, send a solidarity statement to stopfbi@gmail.com, and stay posted on this website to keep up with Toledo's case.

Don't Charge Rick Toledo, Pro-Palestine Grad Student at Cal Poly Tech Humboldt!

We invite all organizations to sign onto the following call, in defense of grad student Rick Toledo, pro-palestine student and member of Students for a Democratic Society, at California State Polytechnic University Humboldt:

We stand with grad student Rick Toledo of Cal Poly Humboldt Students for a Democratic Society against

rick toledo

palestine

humboldt

california

admin

We invite all organizations to sign onto the following call, in defense of grad student Rick Toledo, pro-palestine student and member of Students for a Democratic Society, at California State Polytechnic University Humboldt:

We stand with grad student Rick Toledo of Cal Poly Humboldt Students for a Democratic Society against his arrest and targeting by the state of California for protesting on Feb 27 for campus divestment from Israeli apartheid and in support of Palestine.

In the middle of the night, on March 6, CPH university police officers raided the home of Rick Toledo, nearly breaking down his door, and took him into custody without bail. Though he has not been charged at this time, he is facing four counts of serious felony charges: false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault, and battery. These charges carry up to 14 years in state prison combined. The attorney general of California himself has signed off on a civil lawsuit complaint against Toledo, filed by the university.

He deserves not only support from students, workers, and faculty all across Cal Poly Humboldt, but from progressives and people of conscience all across the country.

Students at Cal Poly Humboldt have a proud history.

We condemn this arrest, the university crackdown, and now the threat of these criminal charges. We view this as an attack on the right to speak about Palestine, as well as to protest in the name of Palestine. No matter what you believe about the situation in Palestine, we should be able to agree that students should be able to freely express their view, to protest, and to take a stand.

We call on all organizations to sign onto this letter, release a solidarity statement, and to demand to District Attorney of Humboldt County that no charges be filed against Rick Toledo at Cal Poly Tech Humboldt. We will be mobilizing for his first court appearance, on April 20, 2026. We stand with the students of Humboldt to march for Palestine, on campus and everywhere else, and we will defend that right to the end.

Steps to Take:

Sign Onto the Above Statement Here on behalf of your organization or as an individual, to show support for Rick Toledo.

Release a solidarity statement on behalf of your organization and email it to stopfbi@gmail.com.

Donate to the fund for legal fees and hardship (due to being fired from his university job) at this link here: https://chuffed.org/project/172807-rick-toledo-legal-defense-fund

Look out for our call to action come April 20, 2026, the date of his court appearance, to call into the District Attorney Stacy Eads' office and more.

For more information on his case, check out these news links and developments:
1. https://www.times-standard.com/2026/03/09/cal-poly-humboldt-activist-rick-toledo-out-on-bail-following-protest-related-arrest/
2. https://kymkemp.com/2026/03/09/cal-poly-humboldt-student-activist-rick-toledo-released-on-bail/
3. https://www.redwoodnews.tv/local-news/activist-rick-toledo-arrested-in-connection-with-feb-27th-goodwin-forum-sit-in-released-on/article_9a1d74da-d505-41f2-886d-c51bfe657b59.html
4. pre-arrest, covering the protest aftermath: https://fightbacknews.org/articles/cal-poly-humboldt-students-face-repression-after-sit-in
5. On the morning of January 21, 2026,an FBI agent came to their residence and called their phone. This is clearly an attempt to harass an immigrants rights activist who has been organizing against ICE deportations for months now. This visit comes hot on the heels of Trump’s escalated attacks on immigrants in the Twin Cities, the unleashing of ICE agents on Somali immigrants and others, and now the murders by ICE of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and the shooting by ICE of Julio Sosa-Celis. Altobell-Rosendez did what every person should do in such a situation: they refused to speak with anyone from the FBI.

The city is an uproar: over 100,000 people marched the morning of January 10 in Powderhorn Park to oppose ICE killings and deportations. People of all ages and walks of life gather on street corners with whistles to alert everyone to any appearance by ICE. Altobell-Resendez has played a central role in leading many of these protests. They have been doxxed on the Internet by right-wingers, who have spun lie after lie about them and contacted their employer. Internet racists are proclaiming that Altobell-Resendez stole guns and papers from cars that federal agents abandoned in the midst of protests on the night of January 14, in North Minneapolis, after they shot a second Minneapolis person, Sosa-Celis. These are all lies. The doxxers fixated especially on Altobell-Resendez’s membership as a member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, and they want to call for a witch hunt of communists who have been active in the peoples’ movements. Now the FBI has been sent to their doorstep, looking to repeat those lies.

We don’t think there is anything wrong or criminal with protesting ICE. It’s ICE and Trump who have been snatching immigrants from homes, schools, sidewalks, and workplaces, and it’s ICE who have been murdering people with impunity. The FBI wants to intimidate Altobell-Resendez away from speaking out against ICE and from their activism, and to do the same with the movement they represent. This is a flagrant violation of their right to free speech as protected by the First Amendment, and it tramples on their civil liberties. There is nothing wrong with protesting ICE, nor is there anything wrong with having a political view. To punish anyone for those things reminds us of McCarthy-era redbait, and we will not stand for it.

We commend Altobell-Resendez for their staunch resistance in the face of FBI harassment and encourage everyone to follow their example: never, ever talk to the FBI. We call for the end of this harassment. We encourage all who follow CSFR to participate in any calls to action that may come from their case or any resultant investigation. There is nothing wrong with protesting, having a political view and a desire for justice, and for expressing it loud and clear. Altobell-Resendez, like Renee Good, is on the right side of history, and we will stand in the way of any attempt to harass, lie about, and in any way repress anyone in the Twin Cities taking a stand against ICE.

Protesting ICE is Not a Crime!
Hands Off MIRAC!
No Charges on Mira Altobell-Resendez!

NAARPR Says: Drop the Charges on Minneapolis Anti-ICE Protesters! These arrests are nothing more than an attempt to silence community members, who speak out against ICE. Two of them, Nekima Armstrong and Chantyll Allen, are well-known African American activists in the Twin Cities.

While ICE commander David Easterwood hides behind the pulpit, the agency he works for kidnaps residents, uses chemical weapons, and kills with impunity. Now, instead of charging ICE agent Jonathan Ross for executing Renee Good, the DOJ prioritizes arresting and prosecuting peaceful protesters, showing the world that the Trump administration is an enemy to all who resist ICE repression, and defense of those targeted is a necessity for us to maintain our right to protest. This is an escalation that is cheered on by Trump and his allies that seeks to criminalize the people’s movements.

WE DEMAND:

Drop all charges against the arrested activists, charge Renee Good’s killer instead.

End the weaponization of the DOJ against peaceful protestors.

End the raids; ICE out of our cities.

We call on all partner organizations to join us and stand in solidarity with Nekima Levy Armstrong, Chantyll Allen, and William Kelly demand their charges be dropped.

Protesting is not a crime! She was brutalized by federal agents. now, Trump’s cronies are trying to silence her with bogus charges of felony assault and threats of up to 8 years in prison.

This is clear and obvious political repression of protesters who oppose ICE and Trump’s deportation agenda. The Trump administration aims to use Isavela to intimidate our community into silence. We say - not a chance!

MIRAC calls on all of our supporters to stand with Isavela and fight back against repression!

Call US Attorney Joseph Thompson at (612) 664-5600 to demand he drop the bogus charges!

“Hello, my name is ___ from (your city/organization).
