Colorado School of Mines Students for a Democratic Society Statement for Alex Orellana
Let it be known that our organization stands in solidarity with Alejandro Orellana and demand that the charges against him relating to his activism be dropped immediately.
Orellana is accused of conspiracy to commit civil disruption because he distributed masks, water, and food to people demonstrating against ICE raids in Los Angeles. Protesting is not a crime, nor is rendering aid to people who are in immediate danger from a military turned on its own citizens. Resistance to unconstitutional and immoral attacks on immigrant members of our communities must continue in order to protect the safety, dignity, and rights afforded to all people.
Activists are facing what are unfortunately precedented attacks on freedom of speech, defamation, and disenfranchisement when falsely accused of being a danger to their community when the opposite is true. True patriots like Alejandro Orellana are those who advocate for change and progress in order to protect their communities and vulnerable people the world over.
For these reasons, we call for the charges against Orellana to be dropped.
